According to Ella Yulaelawati, the director of Community Education at the Ministry of National Education, “Among the illiterate, 64 percent are women while 36 percent are men.”
In 2008, according to UNESCO report, there were 796 million illiterate people all over the world, their ages ranged from 15 years and above.

Ella added that since two-thirds of them were women, they hope they can bring down the number to 2 percent of the total population in the next four years.
Gladly, the condition of illiteracy in Indonesia has captured the attention of a non-profit organization that advocates basic human rights, Yappika. The organization has been conducting free literacy classes in Marunda, the poor neighborhood in North Jakarta, since February 2010.
The program has attracted about 100 women, who are mostly aged 30 years and above. They were taught the basics of reading and writing in a series of classes. Read more!

Winter Comes…and Brings Dry-Eye Syndrome

Dry-Eye SyndromeWinter is many people’s favorite season. In winter, you can come out and play ice skating, ski, shoveling the snow to get extra money, or maybe just walking around and enjoying white spectacles around us. That is, until you start to experience burning, itchy and redness on your eyes, followed by blurred visions that come and go, gritty or sandy sensations in the eyes, eye strain, ligh sensitivity, and sometimes foreign body sensation in the eyes. Yes, welcome winter, and welcome dry-eye syndrome.

Dry-eye syndrome is a common ailment suffered by many people during winter. In order to maintain vision and comfort, eyes depend on the flow of tears to provide moisture and lubrication. Tears are composed of water, oil, and mucus; the water, or aqueous layer, produced by the lacrimal glands that provide the moisture to the eyes. Oil is produced by meibomian glands located in the eyelids, provide lubrication and prevention of the aqueous layer from drying out. Mucus is produced by cells in the conjunctiva, called goblet cells, and allows the tear film to be spread evenly across your eyes. If any of these layers are unhealthy, the dry-eye syndrome can occur. Read more!

As I was reading trough the first 20 pages, can’t help but to think about this girl had everything I ever dreamed of.. a house, an a apartment in Manhattan, a husband and a career. Needless to say I was envy and confused, why on earth she is not happy with her life? “The Alchemyst & The Magician” Book Review

The Magician Book ReviewAnyway, I’ve read these two books written by Michael Scott: The Alchemyst & The Magician. Both are the first two books of The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel saga.
The series unravels the mystery that lies beneath this plausible world we’ve known, beyond every rational thought, and out of reach to scientific minds.

Book one, The Alchemyst, starts when two so-called normal American teenagers -twin brother and sister- Josh and Sophie Newman, both are fifteen and living in San Francisco, discover that Nick Flemming, the owner of a bookshop where Josh works, is the legendary immortal alchemist: Nicholas Flamel. And that his wife, Perry Flemming, is the immortal magician: Perenelle Flamel.
The Flamel couple is the guardians of the Book of Abraham the Mage, or often being referred to as the Codex, which contains the secret recipe of chemical compounds to make the formulation for immortality.
I have to highlight that this secret of life eternal is the least of the secrets in the Codex.
So, you can imagine what bigger secrets that could be acquired from the book.

The Codex has been the root cause of deadly battles over the centuries between the Flamel couple and another immortal magician named Dr. John Dee, who serves as pander to the Dark Elders, an ancient race that once ruled the world, long before men exist. Read more!
